History of MCIM
Michigan Commercial Insurance Mutual (MCIM) traces its roots back to 1980 when the Michigan Construction Industry Self-Insurers' Fund (MCISIF), a workers' compensation insurance program was launched. The combination of high interest rates for construction loans and skyrocketing costs for workers’ comp insurance was driving many small building contractors out of business. A group of business owners took a significant risk and started a self-insured fund for an industry that was seeing fewer and fewer options in employee coverage.
From 1980 through 1999, MCISIF developed a reputation for personalized customer service and value and in return enjoyed steady growth in both the number of policyholders as well as premium volume. Starting with 300 members, the company grew to over 3,350 policyholders at the end of the century. Along the way, it became the largest self-insured group fund in the State of Michigan and one of the largest writers of workers' compensation in Michigan. MCISIF distinguished itself as the leader in providing workers' compensation coverage through its emphasis on jobsite safety and impacted loss prevention, personalized customer service and fiscal soundness.
Building on its two decades of growth and success, on January 1, of 2000 MCISIF took the historic step of converting to a mutual insurance company. MCIM was the first group fund in Michigan to ever achieve that distinction. In 2001, MCIM began diversifying by entering the manufacturing arena. That evolution continued into writing comp for many other types of businesses, and today we write coverage for virtually every industry group.
Over the years, MCIM has also expanded its geographical reach, becoming a multi-state carrier when it opened its Florida office in Sarasota in November of 2004. Our growth continues to this day and we now write workers’ comp coverage in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
